State-of-the-art processes from bench to bedside
Merck Serono is firmly founded upon innovation in pharmaceuticals. Here are some examples of how we bring this commitment
to life:
A biotech leaderOne of our main areas of emphasis is biotechnology products such as antibodies and interferons. Six innovative biotech products
generate over half of our total revenues.
Strong R&D commitmentMerck Serono has its own integrated research and development facilities as well as a network of alliances with other biotech
companies and academic groups. Each year we commit 20% of total revenues to discover and develop new therapies.
New approaches in cancer therapyWe are working on the development of therapies that specifically target cancer cells without damaging healthy cells. Merck
Serono’s focus on the development of targeted cancer therapies is on three therapeutic platforms: targeting the tumor cell,
the tumor environment and the immune system.
Pioneering technology for patientsMerck Serono also works hard to make our medicines easier for patients to take. At the Medical Design Excellence Awards (MDEA)
ceremony, Merck Serono’s easypod®, our first electronic growth hormone injection device, received a gold medal for its innovative
design and ease of use. Easypod has been approved in Europe and North America and has already met with a positive response
from patients and healthcare professionals in over 20 countries where it has been launched.
A unique working environmentMerck Serono’s flagship headquarters in Geneva reflect our commitment to innovation. The complex includes three newly constructed
buildings with glass facades and three fully renovated 19th-century industrial buildings. Over 1,200 people currently work
in the offices and labs covering more than 40,000 square meters. A daycare center, several company restaurants and a fitness
center are also part of the complex. Special attention has been paid to the eco-friendliness of the new facility. More than
70% of the energy used at the site is obtained from renewable resources and water from Lake Geneva is used for cooling.
